Firms to create backlog first

March 4: IT companies may be back to hiring , but they are more busy clearing their backlog of recruitments rather than looking at freshers from the various institutes, say human resource experts. Jayaraj Menon, director, Kranium HR Services Pvt. Ltd, says most companies are clearing their backlog from the past couple of years when campus recruitments were made people were not absorbed. "It will take some time before freshers get the right breaks," he says.

In his view the industry is taking only fledgling steps towards recovery, and it will take a while to see it booming once again.

"What we are seeing is only lateral movement with people with some years of experience being hired by most companies, but this too is going at a slow pace. Companies are taking time to close positions now, and are not in a frenzied recruitment mode," he adds. This is leaving a big chunk of fresh engineering graduates with no option but to take up jobs in BPOs till such time as they can be absorbed by big IT companies. "But the BPO sector unfortunately is not recruiting in a big way either. In fact it sees an attrition rate of between 20 to 40 per cent at any given point in time," says B.S. Murthy, CEO, Leadership Capital.

"Except for a few companies like Infosys and TCS, which have announced recruitments, not many are hiring in a big way currently," he says, confirming that most sectors of the economy be it IT, consultancy or services, are recruiting very cautiously.
